Clover peered into the bag. âYou can talk!â
âTalk is junk,â Susanna said.
âI have so many questions,â Clover said, pulling the Doll gently from the haversack. In the dim light she could see that the mouth was not sewn shut. It was a tiny buttonhole, and the voice that emerged was raspy, like that of a toddler recovering from a bad cough.
âJunk questions.â Susanna crossed her arms irritably.
âI havenât asked them yet.â
âJunk!â
Clover found herself admiring the grumpy Doll again. âLet me ask you this,â she said. âDo you wish I had let Mr. Agate take you back?â
âStinky old cigar box.â
âYou donât mind sleeping in my bag? I mean â do you miss your home?â
âNeed no home.â
âWhere do you come from?â
âOld Missus Seamstress.â
âThe Seamstress made you?â Clover was shocked. âBut she makes vermin. Youâre not scraps of skin and wire.â
âI am many stitches strong,â Susanna said, arms proudly akimbo to show off her little body.
âI donât understand,â Clover said. âYou are nothing like those nasty beasts.â
âI am first best,â Susanna said. âBefore junk. Old Missus makes me to carry bags and wood and rocks. To clear the tumbledowns. To dig deeper tumbledowns. To make the mountain home. Then Old Seamstress wants more.â
âMore Dolls?â
âShe wants tooth bringers and junk whisperers. She tries to steal my stitches so she can make junk.â
Clover remembered the blue Thread sheâd seen in the neck of the vermin Squirrel and understood the connection. âShe tried to pull you apart to make vermin?â
âSo I leave mountain home. Need no home. Stinky old hole.â
âThatâs terrible,â Clover said. âBut how did she make the vermin without your Thread?â
âBits and scraps. Junk whisperers just one stitch. Not strong. I am many stitches strong. Want to see?â
âI have seen your strength.â
âI am not afraid.â
âI believe you, Susanna. I think I understand now.â
Susanna climbed back into the haversack.
Clover blew out the lamp. She couldnât claim to be fearless. But with Susanna nearby, she found the courage to sleep.
